The Liévin Campus

Welcome to the Liévin Campus

General Information

Liévin is a town of approximately 32,000 inhabitants and is situated in what was formerly the heart of northern France’s mining industry. Along with its neighbour Lens, the community composes a very dynamic region of some 250,000 inhabitants and is about 20 kms north of Arras. It is about 40 minutes from Lille airport and well served by numerous inter-connecting motorways.

The town has paid a heavy tribute to world war and more recently suffered greatly from the closing of the mines, but today it is a thriving community which looks forward to a prosperous future.

A Word from the Dean

Since 1995, the STAPS Faculty (The Science and Techniques of Sport and Physical Activities) situated in the town of Liévin, offers students degrees within the European LMD (Bachelor/Master/Doctorate) system. The Faculty is located in the middle of the high-level sports complex which is close to the Arena Covered Stadium (Arena Stade Couvert) and welcomes almost 700 students who follow courses in ‘Education and Motor Function’, ‘Adapted Physical Activities and Health’, and ‘Sports Training’.

Once they have finished their undergraduate studies, students can continue with a Master’s degree in ‘Prevention, Re-education and Health’, ‘Teaching Sport’, or ‘Research in the Sport Sector’. The Faculty also offers a short degree in related scientific and technical studies (DEUST), and also prepares candidates for the national competitive exams (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan,  CAPEPS externe and Agrégation EPS).

The Faculty has excellent facilities (3 Lecture Halls; 6 teaching rooms; 1 multimedia room; 2 informatics rooms; a university library and a multi-purpose gym, as well as having access to excellent sports facilities nearby.

The staff is composed of 21 permanent lecturers and approximately 120 part-time lecturers, along with eight administrative or technical staff. Together they ensure that students have the right working environment which meets high academic and teaching standards worthy of a  higher educational institution.

There are ten or so researchers in Human and Social Sciences who are part of a research laboratory known as SHERPAS and who work closely with the Faculty as well as regional STAPS experts.

The teaching staff of the Faculty are deeply concerned about their students’ academic success and future vocation, whilst at the same time contributing actively to the reputation of Artois University and to the promulgation of specific knowledge and skills within the domain of STAPS.
